Frequently Asked Questions
How do you decaffeinate your hojicha, and is it natural?
We use a 100% natural, chemical-free decaffeination process. Through our patented water absorption technique, we gently remove caffeine while preserving hojicha's natural polyphenols and the roasted compounds that give it its signature nutty flavor.
How much caffeine is in decaf hojicha?
Typically 3-5 mg per cup. For comparison, regular hojicha has 7-15 mg, a cup of decaf coffee has around 2-7 mg, and regular coffee has 95-200 mg. It's as close to caffeine-free as a true tea can get.
Does decaf hojicha still have health benefits?
Yes. Our gentle water process preserves hojicha's natural polyphenols and the aromatic pyrazines that form during roasting. These compounds support antioxidant activity and contribute to its distinctive flavor.
Is decaf hojicha safe during pregnancy?
At 3-5 mg of caffeine per cup, decaf hojicha falls well within the 200 mg daily limit recommended by ACOG for pregnant women. As always, check with your healthcare provider before making any changes during pregnancy.
Does Caff Off Hojicha taste different from regular hojicha?
No — our process preserves the roasted, nutty, caramel flavor that hojicha is loved for. The water decaffeination is gentle enough not to disturb the roasting compounds, so you get the same toasty experience without the wakefulness.
What's the difference between hojicha and matcha?
They're two completely different drinks. Matcha is shade-grown green tea, whisked into a frothy bright-green drink. Hojicha is roasted green tea, brewed into a warm amber-brown cup with a smooth, nutty, caramel flavor. Hojicha is naturally lower in caffeine even before decaffeination.
How do I brew Caff Off Hojicha?
Whisk 1-2 grams (about ½ teaspoon) into 6-8 oz of hot water (175°F / 80°C). For a latte, add steamed milk of your choice. It's also delicious iced.
